The Right Turn is one of several self-portraits of the artist. The painting glows with the reflections in the water and golden on the buildings.
Here’s the story…
I originally painted this scene for the interior of an Italian restaurant called Ristorante Acqua Alta. It is one of 5 in the series featuring water in the city of Venice. It is essentially the story of a journey through the city. And I am actually steering the vessel and deciding which way to turn. I do have a passenger aboard who is along for the ride.
Acqua Alta is a natural phenomenon that has occurred for centuries when especially high tides caused by the moon’s gravitational pull coincide with a strong scirocco, a warm wind blowing across the Mediterranean that forces water from the Adriatic into the Venitian lagoon.
